A father & son duo Elmer and Matt Enns farm 8000+ acres in the heart of the Saskatchewan Valley near Rosthern, Saskatchewan. This area is well-known for its high quality and production capacity soils and is some of the most valuable land in the province.
In 2018, they also started Maker's Craft Malt's, a premium value-adding operation that creates innovative products for brewers/distillers/bakers and millers. The impetus for this launch was the desire to see our high-end production de-commodified and turned over to like-minded businesses to create premium end-products.
With over 300,000 bushels of aerated bin storage on hopper bottoms, Double E Grain produces canola, hard red spring wheat, malt barley, peas and lentils. The 10 year rolling average production for the 3 largest crops are - canola 62 bu/ac, hard red spring wheat 72 bu/ac and barley 84 bu/ac.
Double E Grain has been running a no-till system minimal pass system for over 30 years. They use RTK GPS allowing them to map and route fields to 1” precision. An example of this utility is how their 84 foot seeder can seed between stubble rows from the previous crop allowing for perfect seed to soil contact and leaving stubble intact to trap moisture and create organic matter. They soil test every field and create a prescription for nutrients. This plus 4R nutrient sustainability practices and sectional control across all application equipment, means they never over-apply nitrogen or other nutrients and also use variable-rate application where appropriate. Over the last two seasons they have seeded all of the areas alongside watersheds to perennial grasses to maintain the natural habitat.
