The family farm was started by Ken's grandfather about 150 KMs north east of Saskatoon, SK in the hear of the malt barley and oat growing region of Canada. This zero till operation has a diversified crop rotation of at least 3 years between individual crops to minimize disease pressure in any one crop. With the assistance of an agronomist Ken considers every aspect of crop production is giving consumers the safest food possible from his farm.
Hat Creek Farms works to reduce the carbon footprint by implementing good practices like variable rate fertilizer, seed and fungicide applications as well as proper fertilizer placement.
The crops grown on Hat Creek Farm's 3600 acres include malt barley, oats, hard red spring wheat, canola, flax, yellow and green peas and rye. The family's grain dryer is the most important tool on the farm allowing them to harvest the crop at the optimal time for the highest possible quality and to avoid weather-related losses.
Ken has kept detailed records of every aspect of crop production for the last 15 years to be able to provide detailed information about the history of a particular field and crop.
Hat Creek Farms has approximately 280,000 bushels or 7600 tonnes of bin storage. Every bin has temperature cables and fans to ensure their grain's long term safety and quality.
